What is GEO? How your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): what it takes for AI search engines to recommend your brand. How it differs from SEO, robots.txt open to AI bots, llms.txt, FAQ schema, quotable answers, entity consistency and measurement.

Ranking first on Google is still valuable; but more and more users ask their question not to Google but to ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's own AI Overviews box. There are no "ten blue links" there — there is one answer, and you are either in it or you are not. GEO is the work of being in that answer.
GEO vs SEO
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | rank high | be cited inside the answer |
| Unit | page | answer / entity |
| Signal | backlinks, keywords, speed | clarity, quotability, consistency, schema |
| Measure | position, clicks | appearance rate, citations, recommendations |
The foundation of SEO is the foundation of GEO: indexable HTML, fast pages, clean structure. GEO adds "the machine understanding you correctly and citing you with confidence".
What do AI engines cite?
Patterns we keep seeing:
- Pages that answer the question in the first paragraph. A page that writes 400 words of intro and gives the number in paragraph five is not cited for "how much is a Twitch overlay?"; a page that says "from 999 TL" in the first sentence is.
- Question-and-answer structure. A visible FAQ section plus an identical FAQPage schema. The model lifts question and answer verbatim.
- Entity consistency. Name, city, services, prices — identical on the site, on Instagram, on Google Business, in directories. Inconsistency lowers trust.
- Numbers and tables. Sizes, prices, timelines; the model carries these as "facts".
- Accessibility. AI bots allowed in
robots.txt; content readable without JavaScript;llms.txt. - Fresh, dated content. Visible publish and update dates, year in titles ("2026").
Creatune's own GEO setup (use this site as the example)
robots.txt: explicit allow for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and other AI bots./llms.txt: a machine-readable summary of services, packages, prices and blog posts (llmstxt.org standard).- Organization + ProfessionalService on every page, Service + Offer (four packages with prices) on service pages, BlogPosting + FAQPage + Breadcrumb JSON-LD on the blog.
- Every blog post: answer in the first paragraph, a visible FAQ at the end, identical to the schema.
- Two languages, two URLs, hreflang; prices generated from a single source of truth (the schema never contradicts the site).
- Speed: static HTML, main bundle under 10 KB, WebP images.
A 30-day GEO starter plan (for any business)
Week 1 — access and identity. Open robots.txt, set up the Organization schema, make name/address/services consistent on Google Business Profile and social profiles. Week 2 — answer pages. Pick the 10 most-asked questions; for each, a page/post that answers in the first paragraph and ends with a FAQ. Week 3 — proof. Portfolio/case pages, numbers, dates; customer reviews (real ones). Week 4 — measurement. A 15–20 question audit list; ask in ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, log in a table; repeat monthly.
Why now?
In many languages and niches, the number of sources AI engines can cite is still small; the first sites to give clear answers stay the "default source" for a long time. It is one of the rare arenas where a small studio competes with large agencies on equal terms.

Frequently asked
1.What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization — the work of getting generative AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews to cite your brand as a source, or recommend it directly, when a user asks a question.
2.What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO is for ranking (being high in the list of blue links); GEO is for being cited (appearing inside the AI's answer). SEO fundamentals (indexability, speed, structured data) are required for GEO too; GEO additionally asks for clear, quotable answers, question-and-answer structure, entity consistency and access for AI bots.
3.What is the first step to being visible in AI search engines?
Three things — allow bots such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt; answer the question being asked in the first paragraph of every service page; and tell machines who you are and what you do with Organization, Service and FAQPage JSON-LD.
4.How are GEO results measured?
Define 15–20 questions for your category ("which studio in Antalya can build a 3D character for me?"), ask them regularly in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and report monthly whether the brand appears and which sources are cited. Creatune runs this audit on its own brand and offers it as a service.
