Channel mascot design: 2D or 3D, where it is used, how it is made

Streamer and brand mascots: the same character from character design to emotes, Starting Soon, animated profile picture and website. 2D illustration vs 3D model, turntables and image sequences, how it differs from a VTuber, with Creatune's own mascot as the example.

The Creatune mascot — a hoodie-wearing 3D character that turns a full circle on scroll

A mascot is the face of the channel or brand — but not the streamer's face. It laughs in emotes, waits in Starting Soon, blinks in the profile picture, turns on the website. Designed right once, it works everywhere for years. We use our own mascot on the creatuneagency.com home page exactly this way: a hoodie-wearing character that turns 360° as you scroll.

2D or 3D?

2D illustration 3D model
Production fast (3–7 days) long (2–4 weeks)
New pose / angle a drawing each time a render; unlimited
Emotes direct render + 2D touch-up
Animated screens After Effects rig turntable, animation
Website static / simple animation scroll rotation, real 3D
Cost low higher, but one-off

Rule: a channel starts 2D; once the mascot is used "everywhere", it moves to 3D. The 3D model does not replace the 2D — it sits on top, same character.

The character design process

  1. Identity brief. Channel name, tone (funny / dark / cosy), game genre, 3 references.
  2. Silhouette. 5–6 small silhouettes; the one recognisable at 28 pixels wins (the 28 px rule).
  3. Character sheet. Front/side/back, palette, expression set (6 faces).
  4. Application. Emotes, profile, banner, Starting Soon pose.
  5. (If 3D) Model. Blockout → sculpt → retopo → textures → turntable — 3D character process. Mafia Hippo came out of this pipeline.

Using a 3D mascot on the web

Two methods:

  • Real 3D: GLB file + Three.js; it looks at the cursor, light is real time. Needs WebGL, can be heavy on mobile.
  • Image sequence: turntable video → 120 frames → background removal → WebP; scroll = frame index. No WebGL, identical on every device. The mascot on the Creatune site works this way (4 MB, 900 px).

For an animated site: Animated corporate website.

The VTuber difference

A VTuber avatar stands in for the streamer and moves live with face tracking (Live2D or VRM rig). A mascot is the channel's symbol and is not controlled live. If wanted, a 3D mascot is rigged to VRM — the two jobs do not exclude each other.

Brand mascots (for non-streamers)

The same process applies to corporate brands: a character turning on the product site, a social media series, animated explainer videos. Making the character 3D feeds all of those channels from one source.

For a mascot, send your references on WhatsApp; 2D or 3D, we will tell you once we see the channel. Game work: Game & 3D.

Frequently asked

1.Should a channel mascot be 2D or 3D?

For emotes, panels and static images 2D is enough and fast. If the mascot will turn in the Starting Soon screen, move with scroll on a website or be used constantly from different angles, a 3D model is made once and produces unlimited angles and poses. Most channels start 2D and move to 3D as they grow.

2.Is a mascot the same as a VTuber avatar?

No. A VTuber avatar stands in for the streamer and moves live with face tracking (Live2D / VRM). A mascot is the channel's symbol — it appears in emotes, screens and socials but is not controlled live. A 3D mascot can later be rigged to VRM.

3.How is a 3D mascot used on a website?

Two ways: real 3D (GLB + Three.js) or an image sequence cut from a turntable video (120 frames, alpha). The mascot on the Creatune site works the second way: it turns a full circle on scroll, needs no WebGL and looks the same on every device.

4.How much does mascot design cost?

A 2D mascot (character sheet + 3 poses + emote adaptation) and a 3D mascot (model + textures + turntable) are quoted per project; in the stream packages the channel character is part of Deluxe and Ultimate. Send references on WhatsApp for a quote within 24 hours.
