Gaming YouTube thumbnails: getting the click on a gameplay video
A thumbnail guide for gaming channels: in-game frame or key art, face and reaction, one game element, a series system and A/B testing. With examples from our Per Regna set.

The biggest enemy of a gaming thumbnail is the game itself. A strategy game's screen is hundreds of icons, numbers and panels; shrunk to 160 pixels it's a pile of noise. The secret is taking things out.
One element
Put one thing from the game on the thumbnail, and make it big. In the three thumbnails we built for Per Regna there is a single hero each time: the throne emblem and a planet vista in the first, a giant hangar in the second, a battle map in the third. Backgrounds darkened, edges simplified.
Gamers like numbers
Players love numbers: "×1000 SHIPS", "LEVEL 99", "1v5". A number is a promise of achievement and it reads at small size. Per Regna's B thumbnail is built entirely on that.
Conflict
For gaming videos, curiosity often comes as conflict: "ALONE YOU LOSE", "this boss broke me", "I tried the worst strategy". Red and white, heavy Impact letters, a single arrow.
Face and reaction
On streamer channels the face is powerful. But the same open-mouthed shock on every video fades over time. Our advice:
- Use the face at about a third of the thumbnail.
- Match the expression to the video: fear, victory, doubt.
- Compare face and no-face versions with Test & Compare.
A series system
For episodes of the same game, a fixed template: episode number in the corner, the channel's font, the same outline colour. If you have a stream identity, the thumbnail system should belong to it — for PeelAndPray we built the thumbnail system together with the channel identity.
The game's own art
If the game has key art you can use it, but on its own it looks like an ad poster. We use the key art as the ground and put the channel's own type on top, so the thumbnail reads as "your video", not "the game's ad".

Frequently asked
1.Is an in-game screenshot enough for a gaming thumbnail?
Usually not. A raw screenshot looks cluttered at small size. Pick one element and enlarge it (a character, a ship, a boss), simplify the background and add two or three words.
2.Should a streamer's thumbnail show their face?
A reacting face works very well on gaming channels, but the same expression on every video eventually becomes invisible. Compare face and no-face versions with Test & Compare.
3.How should thumbnails work for a series?
A fixed template: episode number in the same corner, the same font, the same outline. Viewers recognise the series in the feed and each new episode is still easy to tell apart.
4.Do you make thumbnails for gaming channels?
Yes — a Thumbnail Trio of three ideas per video, delivered in 24 hours, plus monthly rates for channels uploading several times a week.
