Blender for game assets in 2026: the pipeline from model to Unity, Unreal and Godot
Why Blender is a production tool for game art: modelling, sculpting, retopology, UVs, baking, rigging and animation in one app, and how to export clean FBX and glTF/GLB for Unity, Unreal and Godot.

Short answer: Blender covers the whole game-art pipeline — model, sculpt, retopologise, UV, bake, texture, rig, animate and export — in one free application. With the right export settings, assets go into Unity (FBX), Unreal (FBX) and Godot (glTF/GLB) cleanly. It is the tool we use for every Creatune game asset.
The pipeline in Blender
- Blockout with primitives at real scale.
- Model / sculpt — hard-surface modelling with modifiers, organic forms in Sculpt Mode.
- Retopology — a clean, budgeted game mesh over the sculpt.
- UV unwrap — seams, packing, texel density.
- Bake — normal, AO, curvature from high to low poly.
- Texture — in Blender (painting, procedural nodes) or an external texturing tool; see PBR and hand-painted.
- Rig and animate — Armatures, weight painting, actions (rigging guide).
- Export — FBX and glTF/GLB.
Export settings that avoid surprises
| Target | Format | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Unity | FBX | Apply transforms; consistent scale; check forward/up axis settings; one clip per action or named actions |
| Unreal | FBX | Apply transforms; UCX_ collision; _LOD0… naming; DirectX normal maps; ORM texture packing |
| Godot | glTF / GLB | Native import; 1 unit = 1 m; materials come through; OpenGL normal maps |
| Web (three.js etc.) | GLB | Draco or meshopt compression; embedded or KTX2 textures |

Why teams like receiving Blender sources
- No licence cost for anyone who needs to open the file.
- Non-destructive modifiers — bevels, arrays, mirrors can be changed later.
- Everything in one file — high poly, low poly, bake cages, rig and animations.
Things to agree before starting
- Blender version (sources open forward, not always backward).
- Naming conventions, collections and what goes into each export.
- Whether texture authoring happens in Blender or another tool, and who owns those source files.
Working with us
All our game work — Hell 06, Mafia Hippo, Isometric Sci-Fi Room — is built in Blender and delivered engine-ready. See the Game & 3D page, or send your pipeline requirements on WhatsApp.
Frequently asked
1.Is Blender good enough for professional game art?
Yes. Blender is used by indie and professional studios for modelling, sculpting, UVs, baking, rigging and animation. It is free, so every team member and outsourcing partner can open the same source files.
2.Which export format should I use from Blender?
FBX is the standard for Unity and Unreal. glTF/GLB is preferred for Godot and the web, and increasingly supported everywhere. We deliver both.
3.Why is my Blender model rotated or scaled wrong in Unity?
Usually because rotation and scale were not applied before export, or the FBX axis and scale settings do not match Unity's. Applying transforms and using consistent export presets fixes it.
4.Do I need Blender to use assets from Creatune?
No. You receive engine-ready FBX/GLB files and textures; the .blend source is optional, for teams who want to edit later.
